Analysis of setting: I think it was very interesting how Zindel chose to have Mr. Pignati's death at the zoo. The setting of the zoo is important because it leads up to the reason for his death- a heart attack. If John and Lorraine had not invited Mr. Pignati to the zoo in hopes that he would forgive them, he would not have known about the monkey, Bobo's, death in the weak state he is. The setting of the zoo also is important to what happens after his death. If he had just passed in his home it would not be important to many people, but since he died at the zoo, his death could make headlines. I think it was clever for Zindel to make Mr. Pignati die when he sees Bobo has died because it makes the cause of his death something the readers wouldn't have expected, and even a little ironic.
"'Bobo died last week,' the attendant said, still rolling up the hose... Mr. Pignati kept staring into the cage and we stood motionless for what seemed like an eternity." (Zindel, p.141)

I had not thought of it like that. I find it sad though that he dies where his best friend died also.

Your post takes a hold deep into the heart of the book. I like the way you described Mr. Pignati's "weak state". Also, the way you pinned his death on John and Lorraine, like they pinned it on themselves, is great. Great analysis!

But why would John and Lorraine think to check on Bob first? Did they have any reason to do that? Doesn't seem fair to say they should have done that when it isn't really a reasonable thing to expect of them.

Why do you think it was ironic? What else is significant about his death happening at the zoo?
